What can we do?

We have expertise in all these areas: LAN, VLAN, VoIP, Wi–Fi, WAN, and VPN. We can help you decide on what you need, order all the parts, install and configure them. If needed, we can establish an in-house or external data network monitoring service to watch how it is all working, locate bottlenecks, identify failures, and watch and report utilization. Knowing the utilization can determine if you are really getting the bandwidth you contracted to get with your ISP or if any server or client is machine flooding the network. Monitoring is accomplished using SNMP and other standard or custom probes.

What is a LAN?

This is a Local Area Network that interconnects all of your office computers, servers, printers, and any other office equipment with the ability to connect to a network. Other equipment could include a telephone service or a wireless (Wi–Fi) access point using the same network.

Using the LAN for your telephone service is called Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP.

The main piece of equipment to interconnect the office components is the switch. If you decide to separate and isolate offices or sections into segments then another required piece of equipment is the router. As the name suggests, a router examines where the information is headed and selects the best path.

Often, these two components, switch and router, are contained in the same unit. Also, any wireless access to your LAN is provided by a wireless Access Point and also is attached to the LAN. On small LANs, the Access Point may also be in a single unit with the switch and router.

What is a WAN? This is a separate Wide Area Network that connects the LAN to the Internet. This is where your Internet Service Provider (ISP) hands off your internet access to you. Offices that depend on the internet for interconnection often rely on a privacy method called a VPN. The VPN or Virtual Private Network encrypts your data and creates a tunnel through the internet to a remote office. Multiple tunnels can be created to interconnect offices and create redundant paths for increased reliability.
